It would be great if Lichess could reenable sound, I'm losing every game because I fail to see an opponents move nearly every game. Currently I have to use chess.com which has no such problems. Sad to leave lichess though.
Having the same problem. Saying Safari doesn't fully support HTML 5 is misleading. No browser fully support the HTML 5 standard, this is no excuse to not make sound work in a major browser like Safari.

Very funny idea, the right click: Safari immediately deadlocked and had to be killed from the command line afterwards :-(

If one goes for the settings of the webpage via the menu, then everything can be set to "allowed" for lichess and chess.com and everything works like a charm! Thanks @RAMSESXIII

Another solution to this problem could be allowing auto-play with sound in the settings of Safari. The blocking is a new feature to avoid sound-ads and aggressive pages to spam videos and other garbage, it is a built-in feature of the browser. Just adjust the settings and it works perfectly again!

Yes, simple fix in Safari which will block sounds if it deems a website is using them more than normal:
Right-click on address bar > Settings For this Website > Auto Play > Allow all auto-play.
