Introducing Maia, a human-like neural network chess engine

I didn't read the whole article, and immediately went off to play maia1, who is about my bullet rating.

This was stupid for two reasons:

1. The blog post said later that this is like playing against a committee of 1100s, not one 1100. Shame on me for not reading on.

2.Time Controls mean literally nothing to a computer. Duh.

In any case, this is a lot of fun! I did see some mistakes by Maia in my post-game analysis.

Pardon me for not reading through all the previous Com. Ents (there are a lot), but I'd be interested to see if you guys have any intention of opening up the analytics that you mentioned in the blog post, or if that's been done already.

For example, the "predictable blunders" is a thing I Want to check out!
I've played the maia1 for some time now and I have to say that the engine by no means plays on the level of an 1100-player. It's far stronger than that. Sure, maia makes some silly mistakes and blunders, but then it attacks like a GM in some positions.

If the goal was to replicate the strength of the average 1100 player, then maia failed. It's way stronger. But for me personally it's not a problem, because maia1 is about the same level as I am, whereas the maia5Bot is so strong that I have not the slightest chance against it. If you want to beat maia5, you have to be very very versed in opening theory, which someone like me who just plays for fun, will never be.

Anyways, I enjoy playing maia much more than playing stockfish. I am looking forward to improvements and also more engines. It'd be really great to have maia play at 1100, 1300, 1500 etc., while truly reflecting that particular level.
I would like to see maia available in lower ratings as its still uncharacteristically strong for what its supposed to be trained on. I would like to see at least one lower level maia around 800.
@saxndi The same thing happened with me, but if you read the whole blog post they actually explained this:

Playing against maia1 is _not_ the same as playing against a single 1100 player. It's more like playing against a _committee_ of 1100 players. On average, their weaknesses will average out, and they will play at a much higher level.
@b4ux1t3
thanks for the clarification. It sure would have helped if I had read the article properly :)
@saxndi Hey, no worries, if you go back up a few posts, I did exactly the same thing! Haha!
