How do you punish the double fianchetto

Specifically double fianchetto with early h6 a6 and closing up the center alllways gets me especially in rapid and classical

I can’t develop a plan

I’m not so upset because my move 16 was a misclick (O—O-O) I meant to go Nc8 to try and re route it (Had I selected the knight properly on my phone I probably continue the small edge)

But I just keep being confused about closing or opening the position when what and how

Please advise
Thanks in advance :)

I figured I know Hikaru plays it and I’ve seen Nepo I think

But it is rare and I guess there’s a reason...?

Excuse my phrasing I didn’t think there was “definitely a way” just asking -if- or -how-....

I didn’t try to punish it I totally respect it I just think I lost nearly all rapid classical/rapid games against it .

(Blitz I sometimes snatch wins)

So how do you play against it? I mean obviously if GMs play it in important games it’s like “woah 1.g3 that’s brave”

Why is it brave? What is the downside really? How is the king so safe in the center ffs lol
Hm against this setup, you can play basically anything and have an equal game. Just grab space. Like you did. I think you started going wrong after g6 then a6. Where you gave white enough tempi to equalize. You had to go g4 f4 and just smoosh the guy. You decided to close the position as well. You should be trying to break open the position when you have such an advantage in space and development. Hope I helped
Focus your attack on f4 and f5 in the early game, don't play passive or you'll get trapped
As a single or double Fianchettoer I don't like closing the centre.Infact I hate closing the centre. If he closes the centre try to counterattack in the side.Do not blunder or be frustrated.

Totally agree. A few months ago a student asked me to teach him how to play using this Hippo-type scheme. So I had to go through some books and videos to update my ideas.

That's how it is. When I've tried to force events, I lost against this Hippo formation.

I agree with this general strategy. The following game may serve as a good example:
