cheating in chess (not here specifically, gen discussion)

hey all, this thread is to discuss the problem of cheating in chess and to post links related to the topic. here is an interesting link:

http://en.chessbase.com/post/yet-another-case-of-cheating-in-chess

player was caught with two smartphones and microspeaker, among other technological aids. his partner was 200 miles away, typing into fritz. apparently the player was not very good, he was caught because he took two minutes to make even the simplest moves.

is anyone disturbed by the fact that a better player who was using similar aids might have gotten away with it?
Im rather disturbed by bad players who think something must be wrong if someone simply plays better than them and than accuse the winner of cheating with the offence of their blind ambition as the only real knowledge they have as proof.
This wasn't a case of online people accusing others of cheating Snowden. This was OTB and the player was caught red handed.
Cheating is a sign of weakness, even if the cheater is a decent player.
But don't you ever wonder how far you could go cheating... Hacking and exploiting websites and informations systems is one of my hobbies. I feel no guilt or remorse doing it. I feel as if i am teaching the site a valuable lesson on how exploitable their servers are and how easily sensitive information can be retrieved.

I mean I would do this as an engineering project to see how far I can survive without getting caught. Call me delusional or whatever, I just think differently than most. I feel no attachment to the rating points so I wouldn't be cheating to sustain a rating or bring it higher.

Manipulation is my thing.

#5: I think that's a bit different. When one hacks sites, there is a "novelty" involved (hell, it can be something stupid like SQL Injection even, but it's still a novelty) that no one else has found or acted on. On the other hand, anyone can cheat at online chess; you just pop open an engine and start plugging away moves to earn your InvisibleInternetPoints™. Sure, you argue that it's not about the points, that there is a thrill to not getting caught, but regardless, you aren't doing anything special.

I could cheat, but I don't, not only because I don't care about my InvisibleInternetPoints™, but because I don't feel special or get some kind of a rush by doing something that pretty much anyone else can.
its all about the money, in that case. In onlinechess i don't understand why they do that. Perhaps because of the endorphins they receive, if the elo numbers of their computer account rises.
What player are you talking about MeWantCookie, and in how far should this affect the answer I gave to the above-mentioned question, if something like this accures? - I can name the cases I talked about and I have experienced they exist, so that their also maybe other cases doesnt flasify my reply in any respect at all.
The problem is "Snowden" :-). You were mentioning online chess and little to no proof. This should affect your answer because the guy was caught with proof. How is that difficult??
Anyone noticed the article is about GM Praveen Thipsay (former trainer of Anand) ? But what is even more interesting, a few months ago here on lichess, there was an account believed to be hold by GM Thipsay, however eventually it was found out to be a fake.
